This Privacy Policy explains what information Big Sky Life Insurance Co. (“Big Sky,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects when you use bigskylifeinsurance.com, what we do with it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
We are a Montana life insurance company, licensed under a Certificate of Authority from the State of Montana. Much of what you tell us is what the law calls nonpublic personal information, and we handle it under the confidentiality duties that apply to a licensed insurer — including the federal Gramm‑Leach‑Bliley Act and Montana’s insurance information privacy law.
The short version
- We collect what you type into our forms and quiz, plus ordinary technical information every website receives.
- We use it to answer you, recommend a product, and follow up about coverage.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross‑context behavioral advertising.

What this policy covers
This policy covers this website. It does not cover the separate underwriting process that begins if you apply for a policy. Applying involves information this website never asks for — your date of birth, medical history, and similar details — and you will receive a separate privacy notice describing how that information is collected, used, and disclosed before or at the time you apply.
Information you give us
The coverage quiz
Our quiz asks a short series of questions so we can suggest a product that is actually available to you. When you submit it, we receive:
- The state your family lives in
- Who you are looking to cover (yourself, you and a spouse or partner, your whole family, or a child)
- Whether you are looking to protect a young person aged 6–21, and which age band
- Whether sports, organized activities, or a future scholarship are part of the plan
- What matters most to you in a policy
- The monthly budget range you are working with
- Whether you would be comfortable completing a medical exam to qualify for coverage
- Your name, email address, and (optionally) your phone number
The quiz does not ask for your date of birth, your medical history, your income, your Social Security number, or any financial account details. The budget question is a range, not a figure, and the medical‑exam question records a preference — it is not a health record.
A quiz result is a suggestion for discussion with a licensed agent. It is not an offer of insurance, an application, a quote, or any decision about your eligibility for coverage.
Product enquiries
When you use the “contact an agent” or product enquiry form, we receive the product you asked about, your name, your email address, and optionally your phone number and whatever message you choose to write.
Newsletter sign‑up
The sign‑up form in our footer collects your email address and nothing else.
Featuring your business
The “tell us your story” form on our articles does not send anything to our website. It opens a message in your own email program, already written, which you then send yourself. What you send becomes an ordinary email in our inbox — we receive nothing until you press send in your own mail app.
The partner and investor page
Our stakeholder page is protected by a shared password. We do not store the password you type or record who entered it. Your browser holds a cookie afterwards so you are not asked again on every page.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs. Our web server records the usual request information — IP address, date and time, the page requested, your browser’s user‑agent string, and the page that referred you. This is standard for every website and is used for security and troubleshooting.
- Spam protection. To stop automated submissions, our forms count how many times a given internet connection has submitted within the last hour. Your IP address is converted into an unreadable fingerprint for this purpose and that record is discarded automatically after one hour. Our forms also contain a hidden field that people never see and automated scripts fill in; nothing about you is collected by it.
- Where you submitted from. Each quiz, enquiry, or newsletter submission is filed alongside the address of the page you were on when you sent it, so an agent knows what you were reading.
- Analytics. See below.
Analytics and search performance
We want to know which pages people find useful. We use:
- A WordPress analytics plugin that records page views, referring sites, and general device and country information. Its data is stored in our own database on our own server rather than being sent to an advertising network.
- Google Analytics 4, a Google service that reports on how the site is used. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives your IP address, from which it derives an approximate location; Google does not report your address back to us. Information collected is described in Google’s Privacy Policy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics entirely with Google’s browser add‑on.
- Google Search Console, which tells us which Google searches led people to our pages. It reports search terms and click counts in aggregate. It does not identify individual visitors to us, and it does not add anything to our website.
- Rank Math SEO, a plugin that helps us write page titles and descriptions. It runs on our own server and does not track visitors.
Cookies
A cookie is a small file a site asks your browser to keep. This site uses:
- A stakeholder page cookie (
wp‑postpass), set only if you enter the partner and investor password, so you are not asked for it again. It contains no personal information. - Analytics cookies set by Google Analytics, which distinguish one visit from another.
- Login cookies, set only for our own staff when they sign in to manage the site.
We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or social media trackers. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site works without them, apart from the stakeholder page.
Fonts and other content loaded from elsewhere
Our pages load typefaces from Google Fonts. Because your browser fetches those files directly, Google receives your IP address and browser information when a page loads. Google states that it does not use Google Fonts requests to build advertising profiles.
How we use your information
- To answer your question or enquiry
- To work out which of our products is available in your state and suited to what you told us
- To have a licensed agent follow up with you about coverage, by email or phone
- To send you our newsletter, if you asked for it
- To operate, secure, back up, and improve this website
- To meet our record‑keeping and regulatory obligations as a licensed insurer
We do not use your quiz answers, contact details, or enquiries to build advertising audiences. Nothing on this website makes an automated decision about your eligibility for coverage or the price of it.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these situations:
- Our own agents and staff, who receive lead notifications by email so they can follow up with you.
- Our nationwide partner. Our Eagle Classic, Classic Jr., and ScholarGuard products are approved only in certain states. If you are outside those states, we may refer you to our Divergent partnership so that someone can help you. A partner you are referred to handles your information under its own privacy notice.
- Reinsurers, auditors, and regulators, where required to underwrite and administer our business or to comply with Montana insurance regulation.
- Service providers who run parts of our website, listed below, who may process information only on our instructions and only to provide their service.
- Where the law requires it — in response to lawful requests by public authorities, or to establish or defend legal claims.
Service providers
- Hostinger — hosts the server this website runs on.
- Mailgun — delivers email sent by the website, including the notification an agent receives about your enquiry.
- Google — Analytics, Search Console, and Fonts, as described above.
- Imagify — compresses the photographs we publish. It processes our own images, not information about you.
- Our backup software — makes copies of the site and its database so it can be restored after a failure. Backups include form submissions, are held on our own server, and are kept for four days before being overwritten.
How long we keep it
- Quiz submissions and product enquiries are held in our website’s administration area for as long as this website is in operation. Our administrators review them and remove information that is no longer needed. You can ask us to delete yours at any time, and we will — except where insurance record‑keeping rules require us to keep it longer.
- Newsletter subscriptions are held until you ask to be removed.
- Spam‑protection records are discarded after one hour.
- Server logs are kept for seven days and then deleted automatically.
- Backups are kept on a four‑day rolling schedule, so information you asked us to delete may persist in a backup for up to four days before it is overwritten.
How we protect it
The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Form submissions are stored where they cannot be read back from the public website, in an administration area that only authorized staff can sign in to. Access is limited to the people who need it to do their work. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security — but please do not send Social Security numbers, policy numbers, or medical details through the forms on this website. An agent will tell you a secure way to provide them when they are needed.
Children
This website is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
Some of our products cover young people, and our quiz asks whether you are looking to protect a child aged 6–21. Those questions are meant for a parent or guardian to answer about their own family, and we ask for an age band rather than a name, a birth date, or any other identifying detail about the child. If you believe a child has given us personal information, write to tmcrae@bigskylifeinsurance.com and we will delete it.
Your choices and rights
Whatever state you live in, you may ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you and where we got it,
- give you a copy of it,
- correct anything that is wrong,
- delete it, or
- stop contacting you.
Write to tmcrae@bigskylifeinsurance.com, or to the address at the foot of this page. We will respond within 45 days, and will tell you if we need longer. We may need to verify your identity before we act, and we will not treat you differently for making a request.
Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Montana, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have these rights by statute, including the right to appeal a refusal. To appeal, reply to our decision and say so; we will review it and give you a written answer. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for targeted advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front.
Because we are a licensed insurer, much of the information we hold is regulated by the Gramm‑Leach‑Bliley Act and by Montana’s insurance information privacy law. Those rules carry their own access and correction procedures, and in some cases they apply to your information instead of a general state privacy law. Either way, you can start by writing to us at the address below and we will tell you which process applies.
Email. Every newsletter we send carries an unsubscribe link. You can also reply to any message from us, or write to the address below, and we will remove you.
Phone. If you gave us a phone number, a licensed agent may call or text you about the coverage you asked about. Tell us to stop and we will stop.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. Browsers send these signals inconsistently and there is no agreed standard for what a site should do with them. Because we do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising, there is no sale or sharing for such a signal to switch off.
Links to other sites
This site links to our partner agencies and an agent portal that we do not run. Once you follow one of those links you are on someone else’s website, subject to their privacy policy, not this one.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information we will update this page and change the date at the top. If the change is significant we will say so on the site.
